In March 2013 I wrote – I spent many months looking at the options . I seriously considered Russia as I have always wanted to spend some time there, but having survived the last winter in Korea, the coldest one since they started record keeping, the thought of another long, cold, and dark, winter just didn’t appeal. Russia will need to be a holiday destination rather than an extended stay I think. …. So I decided that the next move needed to be somewhere just a little warmer and Vietnam quickly the chosen destination …
I went to Vietnam and I loved it. I think its one of the best holidays I’ve ever had, but it also became apparent fairly quickly that this was not the best place to live when you are travelling with a four-footed furry friend. Reliable vets were few and far between; I could not leave the dog alone, even in a rented apartment, because she was too tempting a target for dog-nappers; and I needed a heavy metal leash for her to ensure she wasn’t napped when we were walking down the street. She was welcomed at every hotel we stayed at, she was petted and adored, and every day I had people asking if they could photograph her, but it was all very stressful and I was constantly worried about her. Our next stop was Thailand and we spent six months there. I have written a couple of posts about Thailand but I cannot say that this was a destination that I enjoyed. I think I need to follow the adage ‘if you haven’t got anything nice to say, don’t say anything’ in regards to my time in Thailand. It is not a country I will ever visit again.
The next stop was, drum roll, Russia! I arrived the day after a blizzard that has closed everything for three days and the snow drifts were well above my head. It was magical and beautiful and I am so glad I ended up there after all. After 12 months in Yuzhno I decide I needed another stint in Korea and I have had a lovely year back in South Korea. I have caught up with old friends, made some wonderful new friends, visited favourite haunts, and eaten more fabulous Korean food, but now it is time for a new adventure.
I have decided to move away from Asia and head to the Americas. I am going to Tuxtla, Chiapas, in the south east of Mexico. I am very excited about this move as I lived in Mexico when I was a little girl. My parents were posted to Mexico City and we spent almost two years there. I visited again as I got older but haven’t been back in quite a while so it feels like a new adventure.
I am going to spend a few weeks in Charleston on my way to Mexico. Charleston is another place I have wanted to visit but not had the opportunity to before. My daughter currently lives there and so I will get to spend some time with her which makes my visit even more exciting. She is already making lists of places I must see, things I must do, and foods I must taste.
So I hope to have lots of new stories to tell, and pictures to show, of my visit to Charleston and then of my new home in Tuxtla.
