Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk; Valley in the Sun – Moscow Times , 31 March 2013
Name the largest freshwater lake in the world. You should be able to do this. It contains 1/5 of the world’s entire supply of fresh water and some of the most amazing sites in the world. It is Lake Baikal lying in the southern stretches of Eastern Siberia. During the harsh winter months, the lake creates magical sculptures unaided by man. Exploding from the frozen surface of the lake, large sheets of ice glisten in turquoise beauty. An even more amazing site lies beneath the snow. The ice is nearly crystal clear allowing you to see nearly 100 feet into the depths of the lake. Hidden beneath the ice, life continues on. The lake reaches depths of 5,000 feet in some areas guaranteeing aquatic life bountiful areas of unfrozen water year round.
